Once the investigation is completed, the allegations or charges are classified in one of four categories:
     
 
Sustained
    The allegation was supported by sufficient evidence to justify disciplinary action. Recommendations of disciplinary action may range from violation noted to separation from the Department.
     
 
Not Sustained
    The allegation is not supported by sufficient evidence which could be used to prove or disprove the allegation.
     
 
Unfounded
    The complaint was not based on facts as shown by the investigation, or the reported incident did not occur.
     
 
Exonerated
    The incident occurred, but the action taken by the officer(s) was deemed lawful and proper.The complainants are contacted by mail and informed of the results of the investigations.
